ATP Monte Carlo: Novak Djokovic topples Taylor Fritz to reach quarters
Competing against each other for the first time, world no. 1 and a former Monte Carlo winner Novak Djokovic is through to the quarters following a one-sided 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Taylor Fritz in 68 minutes. After early exits at Indian Wells and Miami, Novak is back on the winning way, advancing into the 78th Masters 1000 quarter-final and the ninth at home in Monte Carlo. Taylor converted one out of two break points he created but that was never enough for a more favorable result, dropping almost 60% of the points behind the initial shot and getting broken six times in a row to propel Novak into the last eight without spending too much time on the court.
They both had 12 winners and Novak was the one who tamed his shots more effectively, staying on 12 errors while the American counted to almost 30, unable to follow Djokovic's pace in the shortest exchanges to end his journey in the third round, happy with the way he performed this week. The youngster netted an easy forehand in the fifth game to give serve away, falling 5-2 behind after another break for Novak who served for the set in the next game. Out of sudden, Taylor pulled one break back but that was all we saw from him in the opening set, spraying another forehand error in game nine to hand the opener to Novak.
The Serb was the only player on the court in set number two, serving well and securing three breaks to march towards the finish line and Daniil Medvedev clash. Fritz lost the second game after a double fault and wasted three game points at 0-3 to offer another break to Novak who moved over the top with another deep return in game six, staying on the course for the third Monte Carlo title.
