Coaching Rafael Nadal is more stressful than working with Raonic - Moya
In an interview to LCI, Rafael Nadal's coach Carlos Moya commented on how his relationship with the 32-year-old changed since when they started working together at the end of the 2016 season. "I was always in contact with him for his entire career, but now it's different because what's happening on the court is also my responsibility", said Moya. "In the past, I did not tell him what to do unless he came to me for a suggestion, now I come to him to give him my opinion, tell him what to do or not to do. He is very open, he consistently wants to improve and there is always a mutual agreement. He is very humble and he easily accepts the criticism. But you obviously have to always be careful about the way things are said and when they are said. With Milos Raonic it was already like this: we need to find the right moment to speak. When you are a player, so many things are happening in your head. We think about the match we just played, about the following one... We have to be careful and honest too. I am close to Rafael because I have been knowing him for such a long time. That's an advantage for me because a coach needs to emotionally be involved, know what the player feels, what he thinks... And Rafa is a competitor, whatever he does. He wants to always win, whether it's tennis, golf, cards... Everything, always. He is 30 years old but he sometimes behaves like a kid. I think it's good to have a kid's soul even when you are a superstar like him."
Asked if he feels more pressure working with Nadal than when he was coaching Milos Raonic, Moya replied: "Yes of course. Just look at the number of interviews I have to give (laughter). It's a sign, right? I can speak also of all the messages I receive on WhatsApp. It's the feedback of all these people that make you feel the pressure. It's more stressful but also very exciting. I cannot complain about being in this situation."
