Gael Monfils expected to return to action at Estoril Open

French tennis star Gael Monfils is making a progress from his Achilles tendon injury as he is expected to return to competitive action at the Estoril Open. 

The 32-year-old hasn't played since he shockingly announced his withdrawal from the Indian Wells Masters just minutes before his quarter-final clash against 2018 French Open runner-up Dominic Thiem. 

Monfils, ranked at No. 19 in the world, appeared to be ready to return to action at this week's Monte Carlo Masters but pulled out of the tournament at the last minute. 

However, the Frenchman isn't expected to miss more clay events as he should be ready to open his 2019 clay season at the Estoril event, which is set to be held from April 29 - May 05. 

The former world No. 6 is set for an Estoril debut as he has no previous appearances at the tournament. 

Monfils will certainly be hoping to get some good matches and wins at the Estoril Open as 2018 Wimbledon runner-up Kevin Anderson, this year's Australian Open semi-finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas and clay-court specialist Fabio Fognini are also expected to play at the tournament. 

The Frenchman made a strong start to the season as many believed he was a legitimate candidate to win his maiden Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells. 

Monfils won it all on the hard courts of Rotterdam in February, as well as made the semi-finals in Sofia and Dubai.
