John McEnroe: 'Denis Shapovalov needs to be disciplined'
In an interview to Le Figaro, the seven-time Grand Slam winner John McEnroe mentioned the younger players who impressed him the most so far. "Denis Shapovalov or Karen Khachanov are very tall, but very fast too. Shapovalov has a big arm and he is able to beat the best guys, but he needs to be even more disciplined on the court. Tsitsipas may be even more talented. As well as Felix Auger-Aliassime who impresses ne a lot. I will be surprised if none of these guys will win a Grand Slam one day", said the American.
Asked about who are the most promising American players, McEnroe replied: "I think Relly Opelka and Frances Tiafoe are currently the two players who have the biggest potential to crack the top ten rankings. Opelka, who is big and at the same time moves well, has the biggest potential for me. Tiafoe is an amazing player, but he is still learning. In order to win a Grand Slam, both of them have to expand their games and mature for one more year."
He finally shared an interesting thought: "I was born in New York. If Paris is a beautiful city, New York stays at the best city in the world (laughter). We want to make tennis more accessible. The younger Americans have the chance to play many sports. It's up to us to make them keep playing tennis. I dream that one day a New York native will win Wimbledon, US Open or even French Open!", concluded McEnroe, who will work as a TV commentator in the French Open.
