Marseille Open chief reveals the promise Roger Federer had made him

In an interview with La Marseillaise, the Marseille Open Tournament Director Jean-François Caujolle recalled a conversation he has had with Roger Federer when the Swiss was at the beginning of his career and played the French event. "At the time, he told me that if he became world No. 1, he would come to the tournament for free until he does not win the title. And he won it. Federer was a bless for tennis. And even for sports in general. For me, he is the greatest out of all the champions. What he achieved was out of the ordinary. He is great in terms of beauty, achievements, longevity."

On Nick Kyrgios, who won the Marseille Open in 2016, Caujolle added: "His first quality is the charisma. That's what he releases on the court. A behaviour with ups and down. If he were a bit calmer, a bit more established mentally, he would be the world No. 1. That happened with Ilie Nastase but Gael Monfils too. But Federer was explosive, nervous, angry because he was not able to achieve perfection. He worked on it depending on the goals he had to achieve. He kept being more comfortable on the court because that was the way to win. In general, on the court, showing your emotions is not needed."
