Roger Federer almost plays like in my days, says Stan Smith

In an interview to GQ Magazin, former player Stan Smith commented on the players' game styles being similar more and more. "They all hit the same shots, yeah. But Djokovic is making a lot of changes. Roger Federer goes to the net more than the others. But if they do not go forward is because they do not have enough confidence to win the point. So they'd rather stay on the baseline. But it's still good to see the angles that some players find, some lobs too. I like to see some players more than others. Federer for example. He almost plays like I played back in the day. He does everything with one hand, he comes to the net, he is elegant. Sometimes now you always see the same point. It's not very interesting. Tennis is interesting when two styles are opposite. Gasquet plays a great one handed backhand and he can do great things. I like seeing him."

Why have Frenchmen not been able to win a Grand Slam for more than 30 years? "It's mainly on the head. There is a lot of talent, more than the Americans. But look at Benoit Paire, an unbelievable talent. Also, Julien Benneteau was good. I like Pierre-Hugues Herbert. But everything is different when you reach the quarters, semis or finals in the Grand Slams. You Need to be very strong mentally and act in the right way in the right time. They need to have belief. Look at the Big Four, they believe they can win against anybody."

Federer will compete in the Madrid Open next.
