Roger Federer cannot take longer breaks anymore, says Allegro
In an interview to Bluewin, former Switzerland Davis Cup captain Yves Allegro commented on Roger Federer's decision to play on clay again. The 20-time Grand Slam winner will compete in Madrid and the French Open. "I do not know the details, but for me, that's a smart decision," said Allegro. "The current situation is not exactly the same as in the previous seasons. I think that at his age it's important to play on a consistent basis. He should not exaggerate, but the breaks between tournaments may be shorter than the previous ones. Because it's never easy to come back after a long break."
Can Federer deliver his best tennis on clay again? "I do not see problems with it. For me, he is a favorite against all the players but Nadal and Djokovic. I always said that the clay is basically the best surface for Federer. Over the last 15 years, he was clearly the second best player in the world on clay."
On the other players' chances, Allegro concluded: "What about the next players? I think Stefanos Tsitsipas is a good clay-court player. He won many Challengers and he reached the last year's Barcelona final. He is a pretty complete player. Also, Alexander Zverev has big potential. The issue for the younger players is that they have to beat two of the three 'monsters' to win a big tournament."
On Federer, Stan Wawrinka said: "He’s the best player ever to play this game. And any player who is playing against him has always had some problem. But I think what he’s doing is unbelievable at his age, to still play that well—it’s something that other athletes can look up to too. He’s showing that physically, you can still be at the top, and like I said before, [stay] longer in your career. That’s great for me to see also."
