Roger Federer: 'My parents have never been too pushy towards me'

Roger Federer feels grateful for his humble origins. In a recent interview, the Swiss player said: "I come from a very normal background. My parents have been amazing over the time, they have always had the watchful eye but they have never been too pushy. All they expected from me is a good effort and to play with a good fair play and obviously I have had a great support from my wife, see my kids every day when we travel on tour, and that's very important for me to keep the motivation and go through these difficult times on tour that sometimes are just hard, the logistics and trying to manage everything. It's hard but it's so much fun doing it all together now. I never thought I was going to be playing as a dad and here I am."
Federer believes that the game makes you a better person: "I think sports is a great way of life, a great school, a great way to understand winning and losing, team sports, just coping with all those things is great."
The Swiss concluded: "You do have incredible confidence in yourself sometimes but you also big doubts whereas if you see another player or you see the strengths or the weaknesses more just on the surface so you don't know how truly confident or worried you are about the game, so it's a bit of a chess game or you may be trying to fake out the other guy a little bit because it might affect how the other guy plays. But I just tried to play fair and tough and then maybe the better guy wins."
