Tarpischev explains keys behind Federer, Nadal longevity
In an interview to TASS, Russia's Tennis Federation chief Shamil Tarpischev commented on the new Davis and Fed Cup formats. "Players are overall unsatisfied about the changes. For my feelings, tve majority is in favour of the old format. And it's difficult to think how the teams will be made up of in the end of the year. I think all what's happening is not that correct. Tennis became opposite to the training. A tennis players usually plays for 23 weeks a year. 18 tournaments are 23 weeks. And we understand that in some tournaments they fail. But it can also happen you are on the road for 34 or 36 weeks, which is absolutely ridiculous."
Tarpischev also made Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal's examples: "Why do the top players compete now at 34 or 37 years? Because they made a plan and they do not play consecutive tournaments. And in order to crack the elite, the younger guys need three or four years to breakthrough. And they take a risk to increase injuries. I understand affairs as a business, but the reality is that everything goes against the tennis development."
Tarpischev commented on the country possibly hosting the Davis Cup finals in 2021. "The current Davis Cup tournament’s residence is in Madrid for two years. Russia is interested [in hosting] if the money is allocated since it is solely the issue of financing. To be honest, I do not know how much was paid to organize the current events [in Madrid]. However, the tournament, which gathers all tennis stars, is a very expensive event and I believe that the sum exceeds $30 million."
Federer will play his next tournament in Madrid.
