U21 Race to Milan: Felix Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov shine in Miami
Just like with the ATP rankings list, the updated U21 Race to Milan chart has seen no new players in the top-10 after Miami although the results were certainly there! Stefanos Tsitsipas is still the player to beat despite winning just 100 points in March, losing in the fourth round to Shapovalov in the deciding set tie break to stand on 1460. The youngest player in the top-10, Felix Auger-Aliassime has written history again, becoming the third-youngest Masters 1000 semi-finalist, all that as a qualifier! An 18-year-old delivered some impressive wins against Marton Fuscovics, Hubert Hurkacz, Nikoloz Basilashvili and Borna Coric before losing against the defending champion John Isner in two tie breaks despite serving for both sets!
With 376 points under his belt, Auger-Aliassime is now the second-best ranked U21 player in 2019, 674 points behind the Greek and 111 ahead of the compatriot Denis Shapovalov who also played in the last four in Miami to raise the Canadian flag high! This was the third Masters 1000 semi-final for Shapovalov as a teenager, joining Rafael Nadal, Lleyton Hewitt, Andrei Medvedev, Andy Murray and Pete Sampras on that exclusive list and increasing his chances of reaching Milan U21 Masters in November. Following the quarter-final run at the Australian Open, Frances Tiafoe has finally found the winning formula again, advancing into the first Masters 1000 quarter-final where Shapovalov ousted him in three sets.
Frances has extended the lead over Alex de Minaur who skipped Miami and the Aussie is still in front of Miomir Kecmanovic and Ugo Humbert who close the seven-player line-up that would reach Milan directly at his point. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina competed in the fourth Challenger semi-final in Marbella but both he and other competitors outside the top-10 will have to deliver something special during the clay season to get into Milan chase before the second part of the season.
