Vasek Pospisil hit practice court after five months
The 28-year-old Canadian Vasek Pospisil had caught the attention of the tennis world back in 2014 when he won the Wimbledon doubles crown with Jack Sock, becoming world no. 4 a year later and having a chance to compete for some of the biggest doubles titles on the Tour. Focusing on his singles career from 2017, Vasek had played just 19 ATP doubles matches in the last two years, establishing himself in the top-100 on the singles list after reaching four Challenger finals in 2018, winning two titles and 29 matches overall. Pospisil also played in the third round of Miami Masters and the quarter-final of Newport and Antwerp for eight ATP wins overall, looking for more of the same in 2019. After that solid run in Antwerp, Vasek lost in the qualifying round of Basel and Paris, retiring in the last match against Benoit Paire due to back pain.
A month and a half later, Pospisil was still sidelined from the court, getting cortisone shots to ease the pain and start training which didn't happen, having to miss the start of 2019 and the entire Australian swing! On January 18, Pospisil was forced to undergo surgical microdiscectomy to repair a herniated disk in New York, supporting his young compatriots Felix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov and Bianca Andreescu in between. After five months away from the court, Vasek has hit the practice court again on Monday, eager and motivated to start competing as soon as possible and hoping to get at his best by the grass and North American hard court swings.
"Finally stepped on a tennis court today and hit my first ball in five months! Many tough moments and still a lot to do but it's amazing how I had taken being on a tennis court for granted. Can’t believe how happy this made me today. Huge thanks to all involved in my recovery so far."
