Wawrinka: Playing in the same time as Federer, Nadal was the toughest thing
Stan Wawrinka experienced his best wins in his late 20's and early 30's rather than in his early 20's. At 29 years of age, he won his maiden Major at the 2014 Australian Open defeating Rafael Nadal in a four-set final. He then won the 2015 French Open and the 2016 US Open. In an interview with Haute Living, Wawrinka admitted that breaking the Big Three's dominance was not easy. "That was the most difficult part in my career, especially to be in the same generation as Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic where they were winning everything since a young age. So it was tough to get through this and find a way to beat them when no one thought I could. They were almost invincible and that was a big challenge in my career, to get there. But I’m lucky to have won three of them and that was something really special," said the Lausanne native.
On his next goals, Wawrinka added: "On the court, I hope [for] big things, that’s for sure. After one-and-a-half years, coming back from surgery, it was really challenging, really tough. Now I really feel that I’m playing well, I’m moving well and I just need time to get matches, to get wins and to get the confidence back on the court. So, I really believe that this year I can achieve some big things. When and where – I don’t know, but I’m working out everyday for that. And off the court, I’m going to keep enjoying life. Life is good and you need to make it good for yourself. As long as you do the right thing on the court, as long as you walk out and you know where you want to go in your professional life and you do the right thing, you can enjoy the rest."
