Alex Corretja reveals key for Roger Federer on clay
Alex Corretja faced Roger Federer five times between 2000 and 2003, winning three matches. In an interview, the Spaniard recalled what his feelings were playing against the then Swiss young player. "In those matches, you could already see that he had an impressive potential. He had a good serve, difficult to read because he switched his shoulders a lot. But he was not patient enough, he was making many mistakes and that forced him to be more aggressive to win points. At the time went on, everything improved. He started coming to the net more, he gained variety in his game. That's why he became one of the best clay-courters winning French Open but also Hamburg, Rome, Monte Carlo... He was very good but still young, mentally and physically."
On the French Open, Corretja added: "It will always be the most complicated tournament to win. Stefanos Tsitsipas will have chances because he likes to play there, which is important. You learn how to move, change your game and improve your serve. Thiem will be the most complicated to face on clay in the next years, especially when the current superstars will start dropping."
Kim Clijsters said: “The men are playing amazing tennis. Roger as well after his comeback since not having played since 2015. He seemed to enjoy himself a lot. Nadal was Nadal. He doesn’t seem to age when he’s on court here in Paris. He moves so well and is so aggressive. Novak was equally impressive. It’s very interesting to see how the draw unfolds and who will be able to surprise us."
