Ashleigh Barty withdraws from Strasbourg with right arm injury

The 23-year-old Ashleigh Barty has been one of the best players of the season in the first five months, reaching the final in Sydney in the first tournament and carving her way towards the top-10. Petra Kvitova was the one who toppled Barty in Sydney and the quarter-final at the Australian Open, also leading her country towards the Fed Cup final with six live rubber wins! Back in March, Ashleigh delivered her best tennis in Miami, ousting three top-10 players to claim the biggest title in career and find herself in the elite ten for the first time. 

After a suitable rest, Barty made nice progress on clay too, winning three matches in Madrid and losing to Simona Halep in two tight sets. In Rome, a qualifier Kristina Mladenovic ousted Barty in the third round (she won doubles title with Azarenka) and the Aussie was forced to withdraw before the first round clash with the compatriot Daria Gavrilova in Strasbourg with a right arm injury. This injury has been bothering her for some seven years now and Ashleigh decided to slow down a little bit, staying away from the court for a couple of days and see if she can get ready for the second Grand Slam of the season at Roland Garros. 

“I felt that it was back. I tested myself, but on Tuesday, I knew that I would not be able to play,” said Barty. “Next week there is Roland Garros, then it’s the grass season. I will have two very busy months. For now, the only thing to do is to spend two or three days without touching the racquet. I hope that I will be 100 percent next week.”
