ATP Madrid: Juan Martin del Potro and Kei Nishikori win doubles opener

Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro and Kei Nishikori have made the Madrid Masters doubles round-of-16.

Del Potro and Nishikori came from a set down to beat Italian Fabio Fognini and Swede Robert Lindstedt 5-7 6-4 10-4.

Fognini and Lindstedt saved a break point in the opening game of the match before they got the first break in the fourth game.

Del Potro and Nishikori saved two break points in the sixth game before they broke back Fognini and Lindstedt in the seventh game.

Yet, del Potro and Nishikori fell short in their attempt of making a first set comeback as they failed to serve out for a tie-break in the 12th game.

Del Potro and Nishikori blew an early second set break but broke Fognini and Lindstedt once again in the seventh game before they served out for a decider in the 10th game.

Del Potro and Nishikori then made a strong start to the third set, having won the first four points of the match tie-break.

Fognini and Lindstedt saved the first match point but del Potro and Nishikori converted their second to claim a win in just over an hour and a half of action.

Del Potro and Nishikori converted 3-of-5 of their break point chances and saved 5-of-8 of Fognini and Lindstedt's break point opportunities in the match.

Del Potro and Nishikori play next against either Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares or Radu Albot and Nikoloz Basilashvili.
