Guido Pella may be the most difficult outsider of 2019

Guido Pella is the most surprising news since the beginning of this tennis season. The 28-year-old Argentinian is playing solid and substantial tennis, finding continuity both in performances and results, for the first time in career.

The most pleasant result is to see his most important progress taking place on all surfaces on which the season has been played so far. In fact, in 2019, he found performance units in matches played on clay-courts, but he also played well on hard courts. His tactical flexibility, combined with a good athletic shape, is making him one of the most difficult outsiders to face this season.

If he were to maintain his constant level and if his growth were to continue exponentially, he will be a dangerous adversary for all his rivals, except on grass. The exploits of many tennis players are common; now we need to evaluate his performance over a longer period. At the end of the season, we will have a clearer idea about his status.

Pella started his year in Doha, where he was defeated by Marco Cecchinato in the second round. In Auckland and at the Australian Open, he left the scene in the first round against Peter Gojowczyk and against Joao Sousa. In Cordoba the Argentinian played and lost his first seasonal final, against his countryman Londero, while he reached the semifinals in Buones Aires, where he lost to Cecchinato.

He reached the first round in Rio de Janeiro, while he won his first career title in Sao Paulo against Cristian Garin. Between Indian Wells and Miami. he reached the third round in California and second round in Florida, before he reached the quarter-finals at the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters.

His year could find the right climax in the next weeks, with the season entering the heart of the clay swing. Pella will now have the important task of confirming the good things seen in these first four months of the year and perhaps, with his dangerousness on clay courts, being the judge of some decisive matches in the coming weeks.
