ATP Madrid: Stan Wawrinka and Fabio Fognini advance. Medvedev bows out

Back in February, Marco Cecchinato took down Diego Schwartzman 6-1, 6-2 in Buenos Aires and we saw a completely different encounter today in Madrid, with the Argentinian scoring a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 triumph in an hour and 15 minutes for the 14th win in 2019. Serving at 72%, Diego lost just 14 points behind the initial shot but he still managed to lose a set on the only break point he faced in set number two, recovering his strokes right after that to march towards the finish line. Cecchinato stood no chance in sets one and three, taking just nine points in the opener to receive a bagel and not being able to stay on the positive side of the scoreboard in the decider when Diego rattled off six straight games to book the place in the second round.

Marton Fucsovics secured the eighth Masters 1000 win, ousting the struggling Belgian David Goffin 6-4, 7-5 in an hour and 41 minutes, having the upper hand in the shortest and most extended rallies to prevail in straight sets. Eager for at least some kind of positive vibes after a rough period behind him, Goffin raced into a 4-0 lead before his usual collapse in the last year or so, dropping the next six games and allowing Marton to take the opener with a break at love in game ten thanks to a bullet from his forehand. The second set was more balanced, with breaks in games five and six, staying in touch until game 12 when Goffin sprayed a forehand error to suffer a break and push Fucsovics over the finish line. The 10th seed and Monte Carlo champion Fabio Fognini defeated Kyle Edmund 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 30 minutes, halting the Briton on just five wins in 2019!

The Italian repelled seven out of eight break points and created more damage on the return with four breaks from 16 opportunities, enough to control the scoreboard over the rival who is yet to find his 'A game' after that knee injury. Lucky loser Adrian Mannarino prevailed against Joao Sousa 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 in two hours and 20 minutes after a strong performance in the deciding set, joined in the second round by a qualifier Hubert Hurkacz who needed just 72 minutes to dismiss Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-4. The Pole lost nine points behind the initial shot and grabbed one break in each set to sail towards the finish line and already the tenth win in 2019. In the battle of two players who are among those who showed the most this season, Guido Pella defeated the 12th seed Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 after an hour and 44 minutes, notching the 22nd victory this year.

Guido saved six out of eight break points to limit the damage in his games, earning three breaks in total and the crucial one at 3-2 in the decider after a forehand error from Medvedev. Stan Wawrinka had a great day at the office, breezing past Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-2, 6-3 in 64 minutes for Masters 1000 win number 147. The Swiss lost nine points on serve and stayed away from saving break points, hitting 20 winners and 11 unforced errors and leaving the Frenchman far behind in the mid-range rallies to book the place in the second round in no time at all.
