Cameron Norrie keeps it honest after bad French Open first round loss
British tennis star Cameron Norrie kept it honest when asked would he prefer to have met rising Australian star Nick Kyrgios in the French Open first round instead of France's Elliot Benchetrit.
Norrie, ranked at No. 49 in the world, and world No. 36 Kyrgios were drawn to meet in the French Open first round but the match never happened as the Australian was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to an illness.
After the Kyrgios withdrawal, Norrie appeared to be set for a much easier first-round opponent but that wasn't the case as world No. 273 Benchetrit absolutely destroyed the much-higher ranked Briton 6-3 6-0 6-2.
"Nah, I probably would have preferred to play this guy. Nick is a ridiculous player. He could have easily chopped me, as well," Norrie said post-match, per Reem Abulleil.
Benchetrit, 20, broke Norrie in the seventh game of the first set and then held on to his serve to win the opener.
The Frenchman then broke the Briton four times in a row to take a 6-3 6-0 2-0 lead.
Norrie stopped Benchetrit's run by winning the third game of the third set but that was all as the Frenchman claimed yet another break a few games later on his way to securing a comfortable win.
Benchetrit, who was awarded a main draw wildcard by the tournament organizers, claimed his maiden Grand Slam win by beating Norrie.
