Season of records on the NCAA tennis tour
The 2019 NCAA DI tennis championships took place from May 3 to May 19, and May 20 to May 25 in the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
For the first time in its history, the Texas Division I men’s tennis team won the NCAA tennis team championship. With a score of 4-1 in the final meeting—which they recovered from a 0-1—the Longhorns topped the former titleholders from Wake Forest.
On their run to the first place, the Texas men’s team conquered their series in the rounds of 64, 32, 16, and 8 before ousting Florida 4-2 in the semifinals.
In the women’s branch, Stanford secured its 20th tennis team championship title with a powerful 4-0 win over Georgia. On its way to the trophy, the Cardinal team was challenged by North Carolina, who ceded the pass to the final through a contended 4-2.
When the team championship concluded, Florida hosted the Division I singles and doubles competition.
After upsetting top-seeded Nuno Borges—from Mississippi State—Paul Jubb crowned himself a champion of the 2019 NCAA DI men’s tennis championship, as well as the first player from the University of South Carolina to do so. In the doubles category, UCLA‘s Maxime Cressy and Keegan Smith prevailed 6-3 6-4 upon Patrick Kaukovalta and Mazen Osama, Alabama.
The ladies’ championship instead welcomed its top seed Estela Perez-Somarriba as its winner and saw Georgia's Katarina Jokic take the place of finalist when she bowed 6-7(1) 6-2 6-1 to the University of Miami player. The UCLA pair Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield sat on the throne after defeating Kate Mahey and Brienne Minor, from Michigan, with a 5-7, 7-6(6), [11-9] score.
