Del Potro set to be back at the Madrid Open

Juan Martin del Potro is likely to be able to come back to Madrid next week. The Argentinean player has not been playing since February when he did not feel at his best having to deal with a knee injury. He is recovering, training on clay and trying to be back in the clay-court season. Medical checks were optimistic, the process is going on a good way and the 30-year-old is set to make his comeback.

The main draw will take place on 4th of Saturday, May 4 and del Potro will have to take a decision on that date. Del Potro has not left the top ten rankings left. This week, although he last played two consecutive tournaments in October last year, raised from the ninth to eight place, overcoming Stefanos Tsitsipas, who lost in the second round as a Barcelona Open defending finalist. This year del Potro played three matches, all in Delray Beach. The last one is dated back to his quarter-final loss against Mackenzie McDonald.

Del Potro has booked a practice court on Wednesday in Madrid.

In an interview to ESPN a few months ago del Potro warned he will not play the Davis Cup in November. "There are mixed opinions on the new format", he said. "I think they are more on the negative side, but I believe some time should go on. I think it needs its time to see whether it's good and that people who compete there get used to it."

Del Potro hurt his knee in last year's Shanghai Masters during the third round match against Borna Coric.
