Don't write Roger Federer off on clay, says Dominic Thiem' mother

In an interview to TennisNet, Dominic Thiem's mother Karin commented on the Roger Federer's comeback to clay. The Swiss and the Austrian may face each other in the Madrid Open quarter-finals. "Roger playing is always good for a tournament, it does not matter on which surfaces. He is one of the best tennis players ever. That's why you can never write him off", said Karin.

Asked if Thiem considers Madrid and Rome as a preparation to triumph in the French Open or if he really wants to win them, Karin replied: "Obviously Paris is a key tournament being a Grand Slam, but Rome and Madrid are both big events. I think he is there to win."

On Thiem replacing Gunter Bresnik with Nicolas Massu, she added: "I agree with Dominic's decision. Making a change was good. They travelled together for a very long time, almost 15 years and some things change. He needed a new springboard and I think that's good for everyone."

On the romantic relationship between Thiem and Kristina Mladenovic, Karin concluded: "I think they motivate each other. It fits very well because they understand the daily routine of each other. A 'normal' girl doesn't understand what happens all days. Kiki is a professional in everything and for everything. They do the same thing all day."

On how Thiem's tactics change match by match, Karin added: "He always tries to play his game, adapting well to his opponent. It makes a big difference if he faces Rafael Nadal or Reilly Opelka. You need to approach the match differently."
