Filippo Volandri 'Italian Playing in Turin Would Be a Dream For All'

Tennis - Filippo Volandri, Head of the Tirrenia Federal Center, says that he hopes one of the promising Italian junior players will qualify for the ATP Finals which will be now held in Turin. Italy from 2021. In an interview to La Gazzetta Dello Sport, Volandri speaks about the possibility of an Italian playing in Turin, "We must be optimistic by definition, let's say it would be everyone's dream. But it is true that we are working to lay the foundations for a movement that can produce players of that level. The birth of a champion is also determined by luck, but there is no doubt that the restructuring of the Technical Sector starting from the Provincial Aggregation Centers, then from the Peripheral Technical Centers to the Tirrenia Federal Technical Center has given an enormous stimulus to the youth movement ".

Speaking about the new structure in Italian tennis, Volandri says, "First of all it allows us to find potential prospects in all the Italian provinces, then the Peripheral Centers allow children between the ages of 14 and 17 to train with opponents of the same level staying close to home, before arriving, if appropriate, in Tirrenia, which has in effect become our High Specialization Center. And it certainly matters to have selected, for all these steps, prepared and motivated technicians, starting from Pescosolido ”.

Speaking about the young Italian juniors Lorenzo Musetti, Giulio Zeppieri and Jannik Sinner, Volandri says, "The important thing is to understand that there is still a long way to go. But the human and technical material is very remarkable. I have been following Lorenzo for over a year and he definitely needs to work hard on all the fundamentals, and he is aware of it. Same with Zeppieri. Sinner instead is already more sound because he made other choices. It is very comforting to think that we have more potentially high-level boys. The three of them are growing under the pressure of the results of those who are above them. The drive of Fognini and Seppi was decisive for Cecchinato, Berrettini and Sonego, then it will be up to them to push the younger ones ”.

Speaking about the progress from junior to professional tennis, Volandri says, "The junior activity serves predominantly to prepare you for the management of the game, the result is secondary. In the juniors, very few points are played: too many free points, too many unforced errors, too many wrong choices. It's normal, so the goal must be to improve those aspects, rather than the victory itself ".
