Former Andy Murray's coach expects Rafael Nadal to win clay titles
In an interview to ATP Tennis Radio, former Andy Murray's coach Miles Maclagan commented on the Rafael Nadal's losses to Fabio Fognini in Monte Carlo and Dominic Thiem in Barcelona. "It's a bit surprising but he played a couple of matches that he would gain confidence from, especially the match against David Ferrer, a very good and emotional one. Ferrer was rising his game but Nadal had too many options. Rafa was pushed by Jan-Lennard Struff. Even against Thiem, he played well and I feel about his game. I see him picking up titles in the rest of the clay-court season", said Maclagan. On Thiem, he added: "He is able to change the pace, we saw that in the match against Nadal. He is serving some high first serves percentage, he is mixing it up with kick and slice, he has a heavy blow as shots."
Maclagan also praised Daniil Medvedev, who only lost to Thiem in the championship clash: "Some great tennis, 500 is a big deal, particularly this event that has got so much history, the club as well. He has played a lot of tennis this year. Medvedev tried to come forward, play slice as well, but there was no way."
Toni Nadal, Rafael Nadal's uncle, praised David Ferrer's legacy in tennis. Toni said: "David Ferrer was always a special guy for me, I am a good friend of mine. I did not want to face him because he was very good. It's the last year for David and I hope he will be happy in his post-career life like he was in tennis. A really good person, all the best to him."
