French Open fun May 29: Nadal, Mahut, Paire, Pierce, more

Not many are in the mindset to laugh today: with Kiki Bertens, Bianca Andreescu, and Kateryna Kozlova withdrawing from the competition, a sober mood has been hovering over the French Open. Yet, there still have been some details worth noticing throughout the day, so prepare your smiles for the backstage bests at Roland Garros 2019.

1- Pitiless fighter during the match, gentleman right after:

Stan Wawrinka explained during the press conference what had prompted him to bring a little boy from to crowd to the court, at the end of his win against Cristian Garin, “Yeah, people were pushing too much, and he start to cry because he had some pain. I took him out of that mess a little bit, and he was in pain and sad. So for sure, I tried to make him feel better, give him a towel, and try to find his dad.”

Wawrinka got rid of Chile's Cristian Garin in three sets and will face Grigor Dimitrov in the third round.

2- Kids ruled today: While we’re at it talking about this little dude, why not mentioning another adorable child(this one wearing cute glasses)? Hint as to who it may be: Nicolas Mahut impressed with another win… You’ve guessed it, Natanel was back on the court again, his father having stepped a little closer to the most selective parts of the competitions. If both Mahut keep it that way, Natanel might get a taste of the on-court round-of-16 vibes…

Mahut, whose story is incredible so far at the French Open, will face an Argentinian in third round.

3- Memorable picture? Mary Pierce is the last Frenchwoman to have won her home Grand Slam, in 2000. She is today a commentator for France TV during the French Open, and has the opportunity to chat and interview players on the set. Today, Pierce offered her fans a very interesting selfie: she smiled alongside Caroline Garcia, the only bleu-blanc-rouge woman still alive in the main draw. Is this a foreshadow?

Kristina Mladenovic and Diane Parry have left Garcia alone in the second round. The World No. 22 will be eye-to-eye with Anna Blinkova to book her place in the third phase od the draw.

4- Spectators do not steal the spotlight very often… And our guess is that Benoit Paire may not appreciate the fact that one of these times happened right when he was complaining…

Benoit Paire got out of a very tight, all-French match against Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

5- Seeing double: So… Rafael Nadal had to play German qualifier Yannick in the first round, right? And he defeated him 6-2 6-1 6-3. Seems like it was not enough, because he had to get over German qualifier Yannick again to pass to the third round…

Nadal will not have to face yet another German qualifier Yannick to book his place in the fourth round: his clash is set to be against Belgium's David Goffin.

Bonus: If Jelena Ostapenko won 0 matches in 2015, 0 in 2016, but 7 in 2017, does that mean that she will win 7 matches in 2020 because she was ousted in the first round both in 2018 and 2019? That sounds a bit pulled by the hair, but the numbers look nice…
