It's early to say Novak Djokovic is back at his best, claims pundit

The Sky Sport pundit Filippo Volandri believes that Novak Djokovic's win over Taylor Fritz in Madrid was predictable. Following the match between the Serb and the American, the Italian former player said: "It's too early to speak of a great Djokovic, let's wait for some bigger clay-courters. He is coming from a tough time so he needs matches."

On Fabio Fognini's win over Kyle Edmund, Volandri said: "It was a good match, he had some ups and down but it's normal, he was out of the competition for two weeks after Monte Carlo and it was important to win in order to bring consistenly. He played a good match, he played aggressive, he seemed to be fit. I mean, he has some physical issues but today he played well."

On what David Ferrer would have achieved without Rafael Nadal, Volandri added: "He would have been world No. 1 and I would have been No. 10 (laughter). Without those seven or eight players who dominated tennis, it would have been like this. He fought on every point, he was one of the most fair players, an example for everyone. In the beginning he struggled in the Challengers and then he became the man to beat especially on clay. Do you know how much he would have won on clay without Nadal? He played the ATP Finals for such a long time, he was on the top ten for such a long time..."

On the Italian tennis, Volandri concluded: "We have great players for the future like Berrettini and Sonego. Matteo has a big serve and forehand. But ahead of the Rome Open, our biggest hopes are on Fognini."
