Ivan Lendl won't fly to Paris to help Alexander Zverev
Ivan Lendl will not fly to Paris to help Alexander Zverev in the French Open. The eight-time Grand Slam winner cannot be in Europe in the spring although he was supposed to join Zverev in late May just in Paris, the 22-year-old's brother Mischa revealed it will not happen.
Mischa also spoke about the tough time he is going through. In August 2017 he was No. 25, now just 102. "I had a bit of burn out that started in the 2018 US Open", he admitted. "Eight months ago I had a fight with myself inside. I did not want to play anymore, just be at home with my son who was just born. If I do not enjoy, I do not want to play. Then you play, even if you do not feel comfortable on the court and you know you are not competing well. That's how it works week after week. If you are world No. 50, you think everything is okay because you are still competing in the main draw. If you are No. 200, you ask yourself why you should play. Then I had a calf injury and I got ill for some weeks. On the first day in Australia, I broke my wrist and it got even worse. However, in the last weeks, I felt better again. I do not give up. Everything about sports is fun, but the tennis court is so tiring.
Meanwhile, after his win over Marius Copil, Benoit Paire said: "Well, there wasn't very much time. I got here two days ago late. Obviously, after you win a tournament, after a while you have to relax, but I knew I had to be careful because the French tournament was really an objective. So I had to recover well. I had to be able to remain focused after this final. I'm happy I was able to do it. I didn't play a high-level or exceptional level today, but the aim was to win, and I did it. On the third and fourth I played better. I tried to play slower, to put the ball in, so one after the other. It wasn't easy, but I'm happy I was able to win today."
