Kei Nishikori explains how he has benefited from working with Michael Chang
Japanese tennis star Kei Nishikori has explained how he has benefited from working with Michael Chang.
Nishikori and former world No. 2 Chang have now been collaborating for years as the Japanese has nothing but good to say of his long-time coach.
World No. 7 Nishikori has established himself as a top-10 player but he has yet to win a Grand Slam or a Masters 1000 title.
Former world No. 4 Nishikori made a good start to his Roland Garros campaign as he saw off Quentin Halys in straight sets to reach the second round.
"Yeah, he (Chang) has given me so many great things that help me to raise my level, and it's been I think five, six years now with him," Nishikori said, when asked how he benefits most from working with Chang, as revealed by Jose Morgado.
"Always, always he (is) giving me (a) good motivation and good little things that, you know, something I'm missing."
Exactly 30 years ago, Chang won his maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open.
Back then, a 17-year-old Chang beat Ivan Lendl in the final to claim the title.
"And also, yeah, it's very, very still amazing that he won this title when he was 17. That's something I don't think is gonna happen in the future. (I'm) very happy for him. And, yeah, (I'm) happy (to be) working with him and Dante (Bottini)," Nishikori added.
