Lauren Davis: I love the French Open
American won her first French Open main draw match in seven years after taking out Kristyna Pliskova in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 in what was a dominating display by the young gun, smashing 22 winners in a match that last just over an hour.
“I’m extremely happy. It’s so good to be back,” Davis said. “I love the French Open, I love competing here and on the red clay. I really worked hard for that wild card.” Davis entered this event as the winner of the 2019 USTA Roland Garros Wild Card Challenge, was competing in her first major main draw since the 2018 Australian Open Third Round. She lost to then World No.1 Simona Halep in a monumental three-set clash, holding three match points but eventually falling short 13-15 in the final set.
Ranked as high as No.26 in the world on the WTA Charts, Davis has had it tough to maintain the success levels at Grand Slam levels. She skipped the entire European clay-court season last season, citing fatigue and also saw her ranking go as low as No. 264 last year. She then bowed out in the first round of qualifying at three consecutive majors.
The 25-year-old earned the USTA’s French Open wild card by winning the ITF World Tennis Tour W100 title in Bonita Springs. A couple of weeks ago, something she needed to do to leapfrog to the top of the final standings.
“It’s been monumental for me. I’ve come a long way as a person, as a player," said Davis. "I’ve learned a lot and grown a lot. I’m super appreciative to be where I am today.”
