Sweet return but sour results for Eugenie Bouchard at Roland Garros
"I feel like for not having played a match in a couple of months, it was actually not bad" Eugenie Bouchard had said of her 6-2, 6-2 lost to Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko. The Canadian was a bit, not her better self, suffering from an abdominal ailment that at times just keeps returning and hampering her life. She had been injured from the beginning nearly four years ago at Indian Wells and has been labouring with it on and off. It was back in March her last time on a competitive realm when she lost in the Miami Open qualifying round but would not give up the chance to come back to Paris. She enjoys absorbing not only the tourist sights and sounds but the player and tournament environment. "...But it was just so good to be back out there again and play in front of a crowd" she emphasized.
Bouchard has been unique while her court performances may suffer a stinging blow, she has flourished off court with revealing photo shoots, social media attention and just being Bouchard whether she's prancing around in a thin bathing suit basking on the beaches worldwide or being a guest judge at the Races in Auckland, New Zealand at the start of this year. She's been known to be quite provocative on her tennis downtime and that manages to keep the Canadian pro on the radar be it professional or not.
When it comes to her tennis career she has also turned some heads as she tried her hand at partnering in doubles with unlikely players such as the beginning of this year playing together with Sofia Kenin to win a doubles title at the ASB Classic in Auckland defeating the team of Taylor Townsend and Paige Hourigan. Bouchard would a few years ago join forces with Sloane Stephens at the Citi Open to defeat the team of Sania Mirza and Monica Niculescu pushing them into the doubles final. The American/Canadian team didn't mind being a runner-up in the final result to Renata Voracova and Shuko Aoyama because it was a lot of fun and experience on their rackets for a possible next meeting.
Eugenie Bouchard had explanations as to her lackluster performance at her first and last round at this year's Roland Garros but no excuses. "I think my serve let me down. I haven't served in a long time. So I feel like I don't have the consistency...I was a little bit scared to go for it because of this injury I've had...But in all Bouchard enjoyed her competition time at Roland Garros and says that "...at the end of the day, we're entertainment, you know. So seeing all the people out there and hearing a lot of them cheer for me is something that you can't get anywhere else in life."
