Watching Roger Federer play on clay is pure joy, says Mats Wilander
Speaking on the Game, Schett and Mats programme on Eurosport, the seven-time Grand Slam winner Mats Wilander commented on Roger Federer's straight-set first round win over Lorenzo Sonego in the French Open. "It was important for him to have a couple of close sets, as important as winning the first set because in the first set he was extremely aggressive and everything was working so you want to keep this way", admitted Wilander. "You get confident. When you play the first round on the surface and in the tournament where you have had less success, you feel nerves even when you are Roger Federer. But he was so fun and interesting to watch on clay because he has so many different kinds of shots, he comes to the net, hits drop shots. It was a joy to see him back. He played aggressively on clay as when he does on hard courts. That's tough to imagine, but it happened. He is the only one that can do it and has to do it. He does not want to be involved in long rallies and his backhand will always be his weakness so this is a way to sort of cover that backhand up, but he gets so close to the net and let's not forget the speed he has going to the net and hitting volleys. That's the only way that can make him win here."
On the tournament site development, the Swede added: "The Centre Court needed an upgrade but it needs a roof because we do not want to have rain delays. Matches have to start on time in such a big tournament. Simonne Mathieu court is so beautiful, it was so great to see Nicolas Massu's win over Marco Cecchinato."
