WTA Rabat: Johanna Konta and Maria Sakkari set title clash
The 7th seed Johanna Konta is through to her seventh WTA final and the first in ten months following a 6-2, 7-6 triumph over the 4th seed Ajla Tomljanovic in an hour and 31 minutes. The Briton will play for the first WTA crown on the slowest surface and she delivered an impressive performance to leave the Aussie behind, facing two break points and getting broken only once. Ajla gave her best to stay in contention after a poor opening set, wasting a set point at 6-5 in the tie break before dropping it 9-7 to propel Johanna into the title match. Konta needed half an hour to claim the opener, settling into a nice rhythm right from the start and keeping the upper hand with three breaks of serve.
Tomljanovic raised her level in set number two and they both saved a single break point to reach the tie break where the ultimate drama started. Konta led 5-3 before losing three straight points, offering a set point to Tomljanovic who squandered it and winning the breaker 9-7 to move into the title match against Maria Sakkari. The young Greek will fight for the maiden WTA crown following a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alison Van Uytvanck in an hour and 29 minutes, fending off six out of nine break points and stealing more than half of the return points for five breaks.
Alison was 4-3 ahead in the opener with a break but she couldn't keep that pace, dropping 12 of the last 14 points to hand the opener to Sakkari. The Greek forged a 5-2 lead in set number two, suffering a break while serving for the match at 5-3 and fixing that with another break in game ten to secure the place in the final.
