Monfils held on to his serve until the ninth game of the second set when Thiem broke the Frenchman before serving out for a two-set lead in the following game.

2018 French Open runner-up Thiem then broke Monfils twice in the third set to comfortably seal the win.

Monfils, 32, has yet again failed to fulfil his big dream of winning a Grand Slam title.

“I’m disappointed. We have to continue working and the goals are super high,” Monfils added.
