ATP Atlanta: Taylor Fritz, Miomir Kecmanovic and Alex de Minaur advance
The 20-year-old Aussie Alex de Minaur has advanced into the fifth ATP quarter-final of the season, defeating Bradley Klahn 6-4, 6-4 in swift 67 minutes. De Minaur delivered fury behind the initial shot, dropping seven points in ten service games and never facing a break point to mount the pressure on Klahn who couldn't endure it despite a solid effort. He offered one break chance in each set to his rival and that was enough to Alex to seal the deal, breaking the American in the first game of the match and settling into a nice rhythm on serve for a 6-4. Nothing changed in set number two, with Klahn who got broken in the fifth game, allowing de Minaur to celebrate a win with another easy hold at 5-4 for one of his best performances of the season.
Bernard Tomic will compete in the second quarter-final on the ATP level this year, beating Matthew Ebden 6-4, 7-6 in an hour and 19 minutes, winning four points more than his rival and prevailing in the pivotal moments to clinch the triumph in straight sets. Tomic lost serve only once in the opening set, delivering two in games three and five to keep the lead and cementing the opener with a hold in game ten. They were neck and neck in set number two, with Ebden fending off a break point at 5-5 to reach a tie break that Bernard claimed 7-3 to advance into the last eight. In the battle of the rivals for the spot at the NextGen Masters in Milan, Miomir Kecmanovic toppled the 8th seed Ugo Humbert 6-2, 6-2 in an hour and 17 minutes for the second win over the Frenchman in a month.
The Serb dropped 14 points in eight service games, repelling the only break point he faced and taking half of the return points for four breaks from seven opportunities created. Miomir earned the first set with breaks in games three and seven, bringing it home with a hold at love for a 6-2 and forging into a 4-0 advantage in set number two, moving over the top with another commanding hold at 5-2 to reach the quarters in style. World no. 32 Taylor Fritz has stayed on the title course, ousting a qualifier Kevin King 6-2, 6-3 in 70 minutes for the fourth quarter-final in 2019. Taylor fired ten aces and faced only two break points, getting broken once and stealing almost half of the return points against world no. 405 to control the scoreboard after rattling off seven straight games from 2-2 in the first set. King broke back in the sixth game of set number two before Taylor grabbed 12 of the last 14 points to cross the finish line and set Miomir Kecmanovic clash for the place in the semis.
