Novak Djokovic is taking inspiration from Roger Federer - John McEnroe
The seven-time Grand Slam winner John McEnroe said that Novak Djokovic is taking inspiration from Roger Federer in order to play for as long as possible. The American recalled 2017 when Djokovic was sidelined with an elbow injury. “I saw [Djokovic] in L.A. when he was on his sabbatical and Roger had come back and won something. He goes ‘well I guess I’m playing until 36/7’ and that was a few years ago. So now he’s really thinking like ‘okay, I’m going to win at least four or five, I’m going to get to 20 and give this guy a real run for his money’. He won four majors in a row and then he looked elsewhere, which is kind of normal, he was 27, 28. But he’s got his mojo back, I think he realised that he’s still in the hunt for the record books. Twenty isn’t impossible to reach, the 20 majors of Roger, he’s many years younger. He can win on any surface, that makes him so dangerous. He loves to be in the record books, he loves to chase history," McEnroe said on BBC.
Praising Djokovic furthermore, the 59-year-old added: “To me he’s sort of like a human backboard. He’s got incredible length and flexibility. I would still try to bring him in, he’s not as comfortable. That would be what I would try to do. It depends on your style of game. You can’t ask someone who hits a big forearm but doesn’t like to volley to suddenly start serving and volleying, it’s just not going to happen. Very few people match up against him, it’s extremely difficult. You’ve just got to play with a lot of energy and just bring it and just hope for the best.”
