Thanasi Kokkinakis: I hope to stay healthy and make some good runs

Injury-plagued Thanasi Kokkinakis hopes to stay healthy and start making good results after clinching his first tour win in 16 months.

The 23-year-old kicked off his Los Cabos campaign with a straight-set win over qualifier world No. 192 Maxime Janvier 6-4 6-4.

The Australian, who ended runner-up at the Los Cabos event in 2017, was awarded a wildcard into the event by the tournament organizers.

Kokkinakis, ranked at No. 191 in the world, is playing just his fifth tournament of the season as a right shoulder issue has been giving the Australian lots of problems throughout the year.

Kokkinakis achieved a career-high ranking of No. 69 in the world in 2015 but was unable to continue his rise and improvement due to various injuries.

"Hopefully I can stay healthy and put together some good runs, whether it's this week or not. Hopefully for the rest of the year [I can] stay healthy," Kokkinakis said after beating Janvier, as revealed on the ATP website.

Kokkinakis will fight against this year's Australian Open semifinalist Lucas Pouille for a place in the Los Cabos quarterfinal.
