Ugo Humbert on why he has been so successful in his first grass season
Rising French star Ugo Humbert's first grass campaign has been a success as the 21-year-old is enjoying playing on the grass surface.
Humbert, ranked at a career-high ranking of No. 48 in the world, is playing his sixth grass event of this grass season in Newport.
The fourth-seeded Frenchman had a first round bye in Newport before he saw off Indian Ramkumar Ramanathan 7-6 (5) 6-0 to progress into the quarterfinal.
The main highlight of Humbert's maiden grass season has been his campaign at The All England Club.
The 21-year-old surprised fellow compatriot Gael Monfils in his Wimbledon opener, beat Spain's Marcel Granollers in the second round and picked up a shock straight-set win over teenage sensation Felix Auger-Aliassime before falling to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the round-of-16.
"It's my first season on grass. I was really curious about my game on this surface and I really like it with my serve, my backhand... I did great volleys so yeah, I really like grass," Humbert told Andy Katz after beating Ramanathan.
Humbert will fight against Ilya Ivashka for a place in the Newport semifinal.
