Wildcard Christopher Eubanks reacts to defending champion in Newport
Wildcard Christopher Eubanks says a good service display contributed heavily in him stunning defending champion Steve Johnson in the Newport first round.
Eubanks, ranked at No. 188 in the world, knocked out the fifth-seeded defending champion 7-6 (9) 7-) (5).
Eubanks lost his serve early on but recovered from a break down to force a tie-break.
The 23-year-old saved a total of four set points before he converted his second set point to win a tight opener.
Johnson once again claimed an early break but failed to serve out for the second set in the 10th game.
Eubanks then realized his second match point in the tie-break to claim his second tour-level win of the season.
"I think I served extremely well, especially in the times I needed to," Eubanks said post-match, per the ATP website. "I started off being down a break and then I really found a good rhythm, so the serve definitely propelled me to victory today.
"Anytime you get a win at tour-level, you’ve got to come out here and play really well. Especially [winning] in the U.S. it’s always super special, so it feels really good. I’m really excited."
