WTA Bucharest: Patricia Maria Tig and Elena Rybakina reach final
Competing on the WTA level for the first time since Guangzhou in 2017, an unranked Patricia Maria Tig is through to her second WTA final at home in Bucharest, beating the 6th seed Laura Siegemund 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 27 minutes. The German won their previous two matches in 2016 and it was all about the Romanian this time around, fending off all eight break points and delivering four breaks of serve for the place in the final. Patricia Maria stayed unbroken in the first, third and ninth games of the first set, securing a break at love in game six that was enough to take the first part of the encounter 6-3.
It was all about Tig in set number two, stealing Siegemund's serve three times in a row to march over the finish line and celebrate the most significant result since Baku 2015 with her little daughter. In the other semi-final, the 20-year-old Elena Rybakina toppled a qualifier Martina Di Giuseppe 6-3, 6-2 in just over an hour to join Tig in the title match, chasing the first trophy on the main level just a month after advancing into the first semi-final in s-Hertogenbosch. Elena was the dominant figure behind her initial shot, dropping 13 points in nine service games and playing against one break point in the entire clash.
Di Giuseppe converted it although she needed more than that to stay in touch, giving away half of the points in her service games and suffering four breaks from ten opportunities given to Elena. The Kazakh drew first blood in the fourth game, getting broken in the very next game before scoring another break that sent her 4-2 up, delivering two great holds in games seven and nine for a 6-3. The youngster lost only two points on serve in set number two, racing into a 4-0 advantage and sealing the deal with an ace in game eight for her first WTA final.
