2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro pulls out of US Open
As expected, world No. 12 Juan Martin del Potro won't be returning to action at the US Open as the Argentine has withdrawn from the event.
The 30-year-old hasn't played since suffering a knee injury at the Queen's Club in June.
Shortly after fracturing his kneecap in Queen's, the Argentine underwent a surgery to repair his damaged knee.
Del Potro, a former world No. 3, has made 10 main draw appearances at Flushing Meadows so far in his career.
The 30-year-old's lone Grand Slam title came at the US Open in 2009, when he stunned Swiss Roger Federer in the final.
After being forced to skip the US Open for three consecutive years, del Potro returned to Flushing Meadows in 2016.
The Argentine will be disappointed for having to skip the US Open once again as he made the semifinal at the tournament two years ago before finishing runner-up last year respectively.
Meanwhile, a place in the US Open main draw has opened for American Denis Kudla -- who had been already awarded a main draw wildcard.
Now, since Kudla doesn't need a wildcard anymore, the USTA will most likely hand it to another local player.
