ATP US Open: Zverev goes to the distance again. Wawrinka and Medvedev win

The 6th seed Alexander Zverev is through to the third round at the US Open for the second year in a row, unable to avoid another five-setter in a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win over Frances Tiafoe in three hours and nine minutes. No one was able to build on the momentum after winning the set, with Zverev who delivered the better overall package with 63 winners and 53 unforced errors, including 11 double faults. The German won just four points more than his rival, earning four breaks and suffering three in his games to wrap up the victory and advance into the last 32. There was nothing wrong with Alexander's game in the opener, taking the first ten points and securing it with a hold at 5-3. From no break points offered in the opener, Zverev came to seven in set number two, allowing Tiafoe to break him in game six and bring the set home from there, only to lose ground in set number three where Zverev had the edge again despite a terrible body language in the previous set.

It was the German's turn to play beyond the level of his ranking position in the fourth set again, suffering two breaks and hardly winning a point on the return and having to work much harder in the decider if he wanted the victory. Out of sudden, everything was fine with his game in the decider, breaking Frances in game two and sailing through his service games for a 6-3 and a win. Unlike Zverev, David Goffin needed an hour and 26 minutes to dismiss Gregoire Barrere 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 and reach the third round for the fifth time in the last six years. David lost only 17 points on serve, suffering one break and stealing half of the return points to grab seven breaks from 12 chances. After two tight sets, Denis Kudla shifted into a higher gear against Dusan Lajovic in the fourth to notch a 7-5, 7-5, 0-6, 6-3 win in two hours and 41 minutes for the best result in New York in a career.

A lucky loser Kamil Majchrzak has spent seven hours on the court so far but advanced into the third round with a 6-7, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Pablo Cuevas, saving more energy for the decider to claim another five-setter win and advance into the last 32. After three hours and ten minutes, Daniel Evans toppled Lucas Pouille 6-4, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 after more than 80 unforced errors from the Frenchman who lost serve eight times, propelling the Briton into the third-round clash against Roger Federer on Friday. Alex de Minaur will play in the third round at the US Open for the second straight year, defeating Cristian Garin 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 in two hours and 21 minutes. The Aussie fired 28 winners and 18 unforced errors, losing serve once and securing five breaks on the other hand, controlling the pace in sets one and three and staying focused in the second to prevail in straight sets.

The Italian veteran Paolo Lorenzi needed four hours and 48 minutes to dismiss the young Serb Miomir Kecmanovic 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, spending more than nine hours on the court in the opening two rounds, not even including three qualifying matches! Miomir won four points more in total and scored the same number of breaks as Lorenzi, losing the edge in two tie breaks and moving over the top with a double break in the decider to reach the third round in New York for the third time in four years. In another four-hour encounter, Aljaz Bedene took down Benoit Paire 4-6, 6-7, 6-2 7-5, 7-6 after a thrilling comeback, trailing 4-1 in the final set before bouncing back and stealing it in the tie break to advance into the third round at Majors for the third time. Stan Wawrinka took down Jeremy Chardy 6-4, 6-3, 6-7 6-3 in two hours and 44 minutes, hitting 45 winners and 33 unforced errors to avoid breaks of serve!

The Swiss converted three out of 13 chances, unable to steal Chardy's serve in set number three but doing that in the other three to find himself in the third round. The 5th seed Daniil Medvedev was one of the title favorites before the event started but a lot of tennis he had played before New York is taking its dues, beating Hugo Dellien 6-3, 7-5, 5-, 7-63 in two hours and 43 minutes, leading 5-4 in the third set when the cramps started. Dellien claimed 12 of the next 14 points, stealing the set before Daniil brought the victory home in set number four after five straight breaks, three for the Russian who has to play the third-round match against Feliciano Lopez already on Friday night.
