Grigor Dimitrov shares reasons behind terrible 2019 season

In an interview to Milenio, Grigor Dimitrov shared the reasons behind his terrible 2019 season that reached his peak in last week's Atlanta Open losing to the world No. 405 Kevin King. "It was several things", explained Dimitrov. "In tennis, there are many key factors and if you do not have the right mentality, winning doesn't get any easy. The arm issue stopped me, over the last six months it bothered me a lot. I had to change my racket and it's never easy to get used to it", recognized Dimitrov, who also hired a new coach, the former world No. 8 Radek Stepanek. "It takes time and it's normal to lose confidence and game, I have to come back but it's something emotional for me. It cannot get any worse, I am doing better and I think I am heading in the right direction."

On his tight three-set win over Steve Johnson, Dimitrov, who prevailed in the third set tie-break, added: "I knew I had to be ready for everything. It was a pretty good first set from me. Then in the second, I had my chances. He started serving better. It was just harder to return well, and then again in the third, he played a good game to break me when I was serving [for the match]. The tie-break was super tight."

On his next opponent Guido Pella, who reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals last month, Dimitrov added: "He's been playing great tennis. Lefty. I can expect anything from him, but right now I'm really focussed on my side of the net. This is the more important thing. I've worked on a lot of things in the past months. I feel that slowly but surely I'm getting back to a good rhythm."
