'Younger guys becoming like Federer, Nadal is almost impossible' - Massu
In an interview to Revista Grip, Dominic Thiem's coach commented on Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic's dominance. Massu believes there is a long way to go for the younger guys to emulate the Big Three. "There are some 20-year-old players and many over 30-year-olds. Before, at 30 years you retired. And the current 30-year-olds will not happen again. There are guys who play very well like Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic, Nick Kyrgios, but it's very difficult for them to achieve what Federer, Nadal did. They are amazing, but to be like them is almost impossible," said Massu.
On his regrets during his career, Massu added: "I did not win a Grand Slam but I always bumped into a Federer or Juan Carlos Ferrero in the third round. I thought we could have won the Davis Cup because we had a very good team. Marcelo Rios was 18 years old and there were other two or three players, but it's complicated to make it all the way and lift the trophy. I never thought I would have won the 2004 Olympic Games in Sydney. It happened all very quickly. Everything changes. It was the greatest week in my career and I do not know if I will experience something like this again as a coach."
Massu has been coaching Thiem since early February in Buenos Aires. They have achieved great results together so far including winning his maiden Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells and losing the French Open final to the 12-time tournament winner Rafael Nadal.
