Playing close matches may benefit Roger Federer in the long run - Wilander
Speaking on Eurosport Mats Wilander analyzed Roger Federer's slow start against Damir Dzumhur. Federer lost the first set for the second consecutive match after the first round against Sumit Nagal.
Wilander said: "Today I can sort of understand his struggles more than in the first round. Because he played under the roof, it's humid outside, it plays much slower than when you are outside. The roof makes it loud. It's a good thing for him because he needs to play a couple of close matches, he needs to get going, so I do not mind him losing the first set as long as he goes through. It takes him a little bit of time to find his time especially on the forehand side, it's not that easy to take it early. You have to figure out how much spin you are gonna take on the ball. He'd better not lose the first set because then he cannot afford to go two sets to love down especially going forward in the draw. I am not really worried. When you watch Federer playing today, he is like, I have beaten those guys so many times, I have never lost in the second round here, he has won 19 second rounds at the US Open. It is amazing. He has a hard time getting it going emotionally and then it's hard for him to be aggressive when he is not emotionally involved. But he has been playing so many big matches."
