US Open: Coco Gauff beats Babos, makes history as youngest in 3R

Coco Gauff became the youngest player to make it to the US Open third round since 1996 when Anna Kournikova reached the round-of-32. The 15-year-old defeated Hungary’s qualifier Timea Babos 6-2, 4-6 6-4 in two hours and 22 minutes on Thursday at the 2019 US Open.

The teenager won a massive 83% points off her first serve to Babos’ 73%. She was also successful with her net approaches, winning 81% points at the net to Babos’ 42%. In fact, of the two players, it was Babos who frequented the net more (24 times) as compared to Gauff (only 16 approaches).

Both players had 32 winners in the match. But Gauff had eight unforced errors fewer than Babos’ 42 which also made the difference in the match.

Gauff will play defending champion and top-seed Naomi Osaka in the third round.

Caroline Wozniacki will take on Bianca Andreescu in the third round after her second-round win against Danielle Collins on Thursday. Wozniacki dropped the first set but made a comeback with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win in two hours and eight minutes.

The Dane won 75% points off her first serves, hit 24 winners and had 14 unforced errors. The American won 68% points coming behind her first serves and had 43 winners and 46 unforced errors in the match.

Belinda Bencic defeated Alize Cornet in their round-of-64 encounter 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 to advance at Flushing Meadows. The 13th seed from Switzerland will now play the 21st-seeded Anett Kontaveit in the third round. Donna Vekic also won her second-round match on Thursday. The Croat seeded 23rd, defeated Kaia Kanepi 7-5, 6-3. In the third round, Vekic will face Yulia Putintseva, who upset the ninth-seeded Aryna Sabalenka in their second-round match.

Julia Goerges will play the seventh seed Kiki Bertens for a place in the fourth round. The 26th-seeded German defeated American wild card Francesca di Lorenzo 7-5, 6-0 in the second round. Lastly, former world no. 5 Jelena Ostapenko defeated Alison Riske 6-4, 6-3 to take her place in the third round. The Latvian will play another American, Kristie Ahn on Saturday. Ahn defeated Anna Kalinskaya, who ousted Sloane Stephens in the first round, in their Thursday encounter 6-2, 6-3.
