Roger Federer: 'My coach Severin Luthi would do anything for me'
In an interview to Smash Magazine, Roger Federer shared what he appreciates the most about his coach Severin Luthi. The Basel native said: "His loyalty. As a friend, he would do anything for me. We have been close friends for years and he also knows all the players. He knows my family situation, my camp, my fitness coach Pierre Paganini. We do not lose time for useless things. Our relationship evolved over the time. We both fixed things and we adapted to situations. As a coach, he constantly asked himself: What can I do today? So I am grateful to him, he has a big credit. He always worked hard, invested on himself and he never rejected anything. For me it was just great."
Luthi believes that fitting to player's needs is the key: "Some coaches want to use their philosophy but at the end of the day the most important thing is the player, he is in the centre, he is the star. What Roger does so well is that he allows his coach to say things he may not want to hear. Then in the end it's up to him to take decisions. He may say, Oh, that's a great idea. Or, that's nothing. He is the one who heads into the court. His personality helps too."
For Federer, getting support from his team is the key: "We take decisions together, speaking. It's not just myself. Some days my body does not allow me to do certain things so we put all the options on the table. Seve makes things very easy. His confidence helps me a lot and my family and team appreciate him a lot. With Claudia, his wife, and his parents, we get along well each other."
