ATP Beijing: Fabio Fognini e Dominic Thiem book doubles quarterfinal spot
Italy's Fabio Fognini and Dominic Thiem of Austria have kicked off their doubles campaign at the China Open with a win over a wildcard duo.
Fognini and Thiem saw off China's Gao Xin and Runhao Hua in straight sets 6-4 7-5 to progress into the Beijing quarterfinal.
Xin and Hua failed to convert their first break point of the match in the second game but made no mistake on their second break point two games later.
After claiming the first break of the match, Xin and Hua shut down for the next couple of games as Fognini and Thiem earned back-to-back breaks to win four games in a row and take a 5-3 lead.
Fognini and Thiem completed their first set comeback by converting their first set point on their serve in the 10th game.
Fognini and Thiem twice recovered from a break down in the second set, before claiming their third break of the set for a 5-4 lead.
However, Xin and Hua refused to give up as they broke back Fognini and Thiem in the 10th game but their struggles on the serve continued as the star duo earned their fourth break of the set in the 11th game.
Fognini and Thiem didn't make the same mistake twice when serving for the match as they realized their first match point in the 12th game to seal the win in an hour and 20 minutes of play.
The match featured a total of 10 breaks of serve as Fognini and Thiem converted 6-of-10 of their break point chances, while Xin and Hua realized 4-of-5 of their break point opportunities.
Fognini and Thiem play next against either No. 3 seeds Raven Klaasen and Michael Venus or Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek.
