McEnroe urges Laver Cup to change rules after Rafa Nadal's late withdrawal
John McEnroe commented on Rafael Nadal announcing a late withdrawal on Sunday at the Laver Cup. The Team World did not expect it and they could not change the players for the matches where the Spaniard was supposed to feature in. McEnroe, talking in a presser, said: "We are supposed to sort of match up and then it turns out that Rafa pulls out and then we can't match up in a way especially when Nick was hurting more than we anticipated. So that to me should be a no-brainer but this is in the early stages and hopefully, the powers that be in our sport will keep this event healthy and alive."
The 60-year-old is proud about the effort made by his team: "We fought our hearts out. We were in a position to win. Taylor played awesomely, we stepped up in the doubles, John played great, Roger was playing great. And Milos took it to the tie-breaker so we were a tie-breaker away at the worst so I am very proud of this team."
John Isner said: "I think it's small margins and most importantly we showed that we belonged on that court with that team. Everyone knows we are the big underdogs and we came within a whisker of winning so I think we proved a lot of people wrong and an event like this you sort of throw the rankings out the window and the rankings don't matter at all. We were a very formidable opponent but it stings to lose and this is the third time for me, Nick and Jack as players and of course the McEnroes as captains. Not easy for us to lose and agonizing fashion like that but that's what makes this event so special. The thrill of victory is amazing for them and the agony defeat sucks for us but I wouldn't change it for anything."
