Roger Federer has so much admiration for Rod Laver, says Leconte
In an interview, former world No. 5 Henri Leconte spoke about the success of the Laver Cup. The Frenchman said: "Here it was impressive because the environment and format were different. Here it's our Ryder Cup. We saw all the focus of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer for this competition. And then they were surrounded by a young dynamic and motivated team, it was very nice to experience it so closely. It shows that tennis stays as a single sport but when it is played on a team, like in a Ryder Cup, it allows players to share special moments. Before there was the Davis Cup but it had nothing to do with it. Laver Cup got to the next level."
Is Laver Cup, a competition or an exhibition? "It's a competition! You play to represent Europe or the rest of the world. On Friday we saw Fabio Fognini being overwhelmed by the pressure. He was lost. Having Roger and Rafa on his shoulders, he felt a lot of pressure. He did not make it. They do not care about the fact that ATP points are not there. They are there to defend something else. Here there is a man called Rod Laver who marked and marks tennis. He is an idol for many players, it's thank to him that we are there. Roger Federer has so much admiration for this man and that's why he also called the competition after him. All of us have so much respect for The Rocket. This event allows to honor all the players who brought so much", concluded Leconte who worked as a TV commentator.
