Wilander shares how Grigor Dimitrov can beat Roger Federer

Mats Wilander briefly commented on how Grigor Dimitrov's game has changed and evolved. Speaking ahead of the US Open quarter-finals match between the Bulgarian and Roger Federer, the Swede said: "He plays close to the baseline, he keeps the ball in play, he forces opponents to do something. This is a situation where you can close your eyes and go for the offence and hope it works.

That can work. It worked for Marat Safin in 2000 against Pete Sampras , he did that and he won in straight sets. Unbelievable match. If I was Grigor Dimitrov, I would go out and take my chances playing the way I am playing. Because he is developing coincidence and some respect on Tour again. He can beat Roger, go challenge Roger and see what he can do. In the beginning you have to test Roger because Roger's confidence may be lower after his Wimbledon loss final. Then if you are down a set and a break, start ripping the ball."

On Daniil Medvedev, Wilander said: "His game is similar to the former Czech player Miloslav Mecir's. Daniil's game does not reflect his tennis, so I was impressed by how he handles the New York crowd. He manages to pull the fire on, he uses the crowd to be crazier, to be popular, just like Ivan Lendl before him."

Speaking on The Tennis Channel the former Federer's coach Paul Annacone said: "I think that was extremely smart. If Andre Agassi was around that was going to cause attention and focus. Also for Grigor to be able to learn and think through things. Somebody with that many tools needs to figure it out for himself. He has got a tough match-up, he is 7-0 against Roger and on the short side of that. And Roger has won 16 of the 18 sets they have played so it is a tough match-up. For Dimitrov, when you get on a role like this and you finally reboot the confidence and have everything to gain and nothing to lose there is a lot of danger. Roger will not take that lightly and he knows what he’s up against. It is going to make a shot makers delight that’s for sure.”
