Andrey Rublev shares how he was feeling before facing Roger Federer
In an interview with ATP Uncovered, Russian player Andrey Rublev shared how he was feeling before heading onto the Cincinnati center court in August to face Roger Federer. The Russian would eventually prevail in straight sets. "I was actually quite calm and determined. I always wanted to play Roger and finally we meet. I was feeling that I will go there to do my best not just to enjoy but to compete and win and in the end it happened," said Rublev.
"I just love tennis at the ultimate level and I cannot imagine my life without it. I will work hard, I will do my best every day and hopefully I will keep improving. I still did not see the rankings since the last two years because when you start focusing, Oh, this guy is ten points behind me, you stress yourself and then it's going only worse. So it's just about being focused on what you need to improve and be patient and take your chances and then the points and confidence will come."
Rublev said he is not in a competition with his compatriots Daniil Medvedev and Karen Khachanov: "I try to focus more on me, to focus what I'm doing, not to look what the others are doing. In the end, if someone also do, doesn't matter which age players doing we, it's great job for him. It means he's working in a good way, the right way, and he deserve to be there, to do good results."
Rublev and Khachanov lost the doubles final at the Paris Masters to the French team of Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert on Sunday.
